Classifying best DBM ver. 3.0 armies
(DBM - digest # 2794, Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2000 00:08:55 +0100)
I think it is possible to classify a type 'A' army as follows - it must be controllable, manouverable, and have high survivability (i.e. lots of (S) troops or bulk):
I Regular commanders, but reasonably low cost (LH(S), Cv(S)) rather than Reg
Kn(S).
II A lot of "S" troops in the main battle line/s from the "Big 3" - Cv, Kn, Ax, or another Very Favoured Troop in the current rules versions (e.g. Bd(F) + Ps).
III Sufficient LH/Cv and/or Bw to ensure that the enemy cannot pin it too easily.
IV One or more "free" benefits - Ps support (mandatory for Ax), Dismounting.
V No large Minima, specially of unpleasant troops (Reg Cv(I), Reg Ax(I) et al) or those disadvantaged (i.e. overpriced) in the 3.0 set
(eg LH(S)).
VI No impetuous troops.
VII Must be at least "bimodal" - i.e. have 2 major strings to its bow so it can be listed into at least 2 very different armies, e.g. Patsies main battle line can be Bd, Wb, Ax or Kn - very flexible.
VIII Enough troops to manage the rough terrain.
IX The average element bound-speed of the army should be 150p or greater.
X High Aggression unless very
manouverable.
XI Must have some capability (say 6 EE at least) to crack an enemy frontally fast.
XII Probably must be at least 50 EE at 400 ap, and the smaller its EE is the more "S" it must have.
(I haven't yet sussed out what 3.0 means for terrain advantages in army lists).
I think you will find all the DBM 2.x super-armies still hit most of these gongs, I suspect most of the "churn" is in the "B-List" of armies as the changes in the rules allow (F) based armies more power, reduce LH impact etc etc. My impression of "B" list armies is they are either very skewed towards on e troop/style, or are "A listers" with too many of the above points missing (i.e. the Hellenistics are too slow with too many single-troop minima).
